Why VoIP is Safe
Much like any other device that uses the Internet for communication, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) has certain—shall we say, vulnerabilities. Although Voice over Internet Protocol technology is very affordable, offering big savings to consumers, VoIP phone lines are still subject to certain risks that aren’t necessarily present in traditional phone lines.
These risks include spam, network attacks, loss of privacy, and hacking (or voice phishing). But despite the fact that many critics are concerned about security, there are several measures you can still take as a user to eliminate these potential problems altogether.
The following are some of the measures you can take to ensure security.
Equipment Security
For the most part, VoIP hardware and software already comes equipped with user security features and standards. The most secure VoIP standards include: WPA, WPA2, or IEEE-802.11i. The main advantage of any of these standards is that they come equipped with the best encryption features available in the market today. Encryption is the process of converting data into a form of code that can’t be read by unauthorized users.
Since your VoIP calling system also gives you the option to turn on these encryption and authentication features, you should leave them on at all times. This will protect your privacy and prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing your network.
Firewall
In order to maximize the safety and security of your VoIP calling system, you can also install firewall software. The software is designed specifically for VoIP, and it monitors your network connection for any signs of any unauthorized people trying to hack it.
In addition, the firewall sofware detects any calls or calling patterns that seem alarming or unusual. Firewall systems alert you immediately with warning signals if/when any unusual activity is detected. That way, you take take immediate action if your system is compromised by anyone. A firewall system works much the same as the virus protection software on your computer.
Dedicated Internet Connection
A final way to ensure security is to use a dedicated Internet connection for your VoIP calls.
Although a dedicated line will cost you a little more money each month, it’s well worth it, because it prevents any worms, viruses, or other threats you may encounter on the VoIp network.
In situations where your computer and VoIP phone share the same connection, your computer may also be affected by any worms or viruses that compromise your VoIP system. That’s why it makes sense to run your VoIP phone on a single, dedicated Internet connection.
